Canoeing is one of the many outdoor adventures offered through Pfadfinder. Activities are delivered by the Scouts ACT Branch Water Activities Team (BWAC), whose qualified volunteers provide the equipment and supervise each session.
Canoeing activities are usually offered during Terms 1 and 4, subject to the availability of trained instructors.
Before your session
Your Section Leader will let you know:
- the meeting time and location
- how to complete the required Consent2Go permission form
- whether any additional information is needed before the activity
Sessions typically run for 1½ to 2 hours, although times may vary between sections.
Cost
Canoeing activities cost approximately $5 per youth participant.
Parents, Adult Helpers and Leaders participate free of charge.
Payment details are provided through the Consent2Go activity invitation.
(And yes—the tradition of “accidentally” splashing your leaders is still free! 😉)
What to bring
Please bring:
- Closed shoes that can get wet (Crocs or water shoes work well.)
- Water bottle
- Towel
- Change of clothes
- Hat (if sunny)
Wear clothes or swimwear that can get wet. Unless your Leader advises otherwise, there is no need to wear your Scout uniform or scarf.
Life jackets (Personal Flotation Devices) are provided by BWAC, although you’re welcome to bring your own if you prefer.
Where to meet
Most canoeing activities take place at Grevillea Park on Lake Burley Griffin.
Use the Grevillea Park map to find the Scouts canoe storage area.
Weather and cancellations
Water activities depend on safe conditions.
A session may be cancelled or postponed due to:
- heavy rain or lightning
- the unavailability of a qualified instructor
- poor water quality or high algae levels in Lake Burley Griffin
Your Section Leader will let families know if plans need to change.
